Jacob Shomali '22: Gaining Experience in the Lab

For 10 weeks over the summer, I participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at the Medical University of South Carolina.

After searching the internet for neuroscience research internships, I found out about this amazing opportunity in the beautiful city of Charleston. Since the SURP is competitive, I was fortunate to have been accepted with the support of my research mentor Dr. Marc Seid.

During the program, I studied the neurocircuitry and behavior of opioid use disorder with Dr. Carmela Reichel. My project explored oxytocin's potential as a novel pharmacotherapy in rat models of addiction. 第一吃瓜网's Neuroscience Program, especially Dr. Seid's Neuroscience Research Methods course, prepared me very well. This amazing opportunity gave me a taste of the research I want to perform as a future physician.
