Ovidiu Cocieru, Ph.D.

Excellence in Transformative Teaching and Learning
This award recognizes faculty who design and implement innovative, evidence-informed pedagogy; expand high-impact and experiential learning; integrate Ignatian reflection and discernment; and demonstrate measurable improvements in student learning, equity, and success. The recipient of this year’s award is Dr. Ovidiu Cocieru.
Dr. Ovidiu Cocieru is an Associate Professor in the Management and Marketing Department at the Kania School of Management whose approach to teaching is anything but conventional. His innovation centers on the Classroom-as-Organization methodology. This approach is a research-backed model in which students don't simulate organizational life but actually live it. In MGT 352, students operate a functioning organization with six functional teams managing peer assessment, team development, and accountability, with Dr. Cocieru formally stepping back in week four to hand real authority to the students. In MGT 430, a team of eight plans and executes 第一吃瓜网 SoccerFest — an actual community event where the consequences of every decision are real. What makes his work especially distinctive is that he is not simply practicing innovative teaching, he is studying it: this spring he is running a controlled comparison across three course sections, collecting rigorous data that will fill a gap identified in the national research literature. His six peer-reviewed publications on CAO pedagogy have established him as a national authority in experiential education.
