From the Director

Dear Friends,

I'm thrilled to introduce this semester's Schemel Forum lineup-an array of events designed to inspire and engage. As always, the Schemel Forum brings distinguished scholars to explore topics that challenge us, broaden our perspectives, and deepen our understanding.

This semester's evening courses delve into compelling themes: the origins of science fiction and speculative narratives, the evolution of justice across Western thought, and Italy's cultural transformation after World War II. Each course promises thought-provoking discussions.

Our World Affairs Luncheon Seminars promise a rich tapestry of discussions on pressing global and cultural topics, offering something for everyone. This spring, we'll journey through the complexities of humanitarian crises with Richard Greene, drawing on his decades of experience with UNICEF. Steven D. Hales will challenge us to think critically about the philosophy of restoration and the values embedded in preserving art and artifacts. Cynthia Otto will bring the science of working dogs to life, highlighting their extraordinary abilities to save lives.

Lauren Baillie will introduce us to the United States Institute of Peace, shedding light on efforts to prevent and resolve violent conflicts. Theresa MacPhail will delve into the rise of allergies in a rapidly changing world, exploring their connections to environmental and societal shifts. Finally, Jill Dougherty will offer her unparalleled insights into contemporary global events, drawing on her deep expertise in Russian affairs. Together, these seminars create an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of the world around us.

Highlights of our collaborative programs include a special evening honoring Umberto Eco and his contributions to literature and culture, as well as what is sure to be another virtuoso performance and lecture by Dr. Richard Kogan.

At the end of the semester, we'll pilot a new program: "Vinho and Views: Exploring Portugal's Wine Heritage." This hands-on wine education event will feature generous samples of four Portuguese wines with hors d'oeuvres. Though scheduled for early June, yearly members will enjoy complimentary access despite it falling outside the published membership dates.

Thank you for being part of this journey. I look forward to learning, discussing, and growing with you throughout the semester ahead.

Warm regards,

George J. Aulisio
Dean of the Weinberg Memorial Library & Director of the Schemel Forum
